How to install Windows 11 on VirtualBox

This post will teach you how to install Windows 11 on a VirtualBox virtual machine.
Oracle’s VirtualBox is an open-source virtualization tool that makes it simple to build virtual machines to operate alongside the primary installation of Windows 11, Windows 10, or another OS on the same hardware.

Installing VirtualBox 7 or above is required if you wish to install Windows 11 22H2 or 21H2 without using workarounds since starting with the release, the virtualization platform has support for TPM 1.2 and 2.0 and Secure Boot to satisfy hardware requirements.
If not, during installation you will get the notice This PC can’t run Windows 11.

Install Windows 11 on VirtualBox

Install VirtualBox, obtain the most recent ISO file of Windows 11, and then follow the steps below if you want to create a virtual machine running Windows 11.

Follow these instructions to install Windows 11 22H2 or 21H2 on a VirtualBox virtual machine:

  1. Start up VirtualBox.
  2. Choose New from the Machine menu by clicking the menu button.
  3. Confirm a descriptive name for the virtual machine in the Name area, such as Windows 11.
  4. Put the virtual machine’s storage location in the Folder parameter.
  5. Enter the location and name of the Windows 11 ISO file in the ISO Image option.
  6. Skip Unattended Installation should be selected.
  7. Then press the Next button.
  8. Select 4GB or greater for the machine’s system memory.
  9. Depending on your hardware setup, pick two or more CPUs.
  10. Verify the Enable EFI checkbox.
  11. Create a Virtual Hard Disk Now should be selected.
  12. To install Windows 11 on the virtual computer, choose 64GB or greater.
  13. Then press the Next button.
  14. Select Finish from the menu.
  15. To start the virtual machine normally, right-click, choose the Start submenu, and then select Normal Start.
  16. Click the Next button on the Windows Setup page to continue.
  17. Select Install now from the menu.
  18. Select I don’t have a product key from the menu.
    After installation, you can activate it at any time.
  19. Choose the Windows 11 edition that your license key activates.
  20. Select I accept the licensing terms in the dialog box.
  21. Then press the Next button.
  22. Choose Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) from the menu.
  23. To install Windows 11 22H2 or 21H2 on a VirtualBox virtual system, choose the hard disk Drive 0 Unallocated Space.
  24. Then press the Next button.
  25. After installation, on the first page of the out-of-the-box experience, choose your area.
  26. Select Yes from the menu.
  27. Choose your preferred keyboard layout.
  28. Select Yes from the menu.
  29. If designing a second layout is not necessary for you, click the Skip option.
  30. If the computer has an Ethernet connection, it will immediately connect to the network.
    You must manually configure your wifi connection if you have one, a security key may be required.
  31. Verify the computer’s name.
  32. Then press the Next button.
    The system will restart itself.
  33. If you are installing Windows 11 Pro, choose the Set up for personal use option.
    This choice is not available in the Home edition.
  34. Then press the Next button.
  35. Select Sign In from the menu.
  36. To establish an account, verify your Skype, phone, or Microsoft account information.
  37. Then press the Next button.
  38. Verify the password for your Microsoft account.
  39. Then press the Next button.
  40. Select View additional choices from the menu.
  41. Pick Set up as new device from the menu.
  42. Then press the Next button.
  43. Select Create PIN from the menu.
  44. Make a fresh PIN with four digits.
  45. Choose the Ok option.
  46. By activating or deactivating the toggle switch for each privacy setting, you may choose which options best fit your needs.
  47. Then press the Next button.
  48. Once more, press the Next button.
  49. Click the Accept button.
  50. To enable the setup to recommend tools and services modification throughout this experience, pick one or more of the ways you want to use the device on the Customize your device page.
  51. To proceed, click the Accept button.
    The setup can also be skipped by selecting the Skip button.
  52. To automatically transfer your Desktop, Pictures, and Documents folders to the cloud, click Next. Alternately, choose Only save file to this PC.
  53. Then press the Next button.
  54. If you want to bypass the Microsoft 365 setup, click the Decline option.
  55. To bypass the Game Pass offer, choose Skip for now.
  56. After installation, select Insert Guest Additions CD image from the Devices menu on the Windows 11 desktop.
    The package containing all of the VirtualBox drivers necessary for the operating system to function properly in a virtual environment is known as the Guest Additions.
  57. By pressing Windows key + E on the keyboard, you may launch File Explorer in the virtual computer.
  58. From the left, choose This PC.
  59. Double-click the VirtualBox Guest Additions disc to launch it under the Devices and drives section.
  60. To run the installer, double-click the VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe file.
  61. Then press the Next button.
  62. Once more, press the Next button.
  63. Select Install from the menu.
  64. Click to Reboot now.
  65. Select Finish from the menu.

When you finish, the virtual computer will restart, and you may use Windows 11 at that point.

Install Windows 11 on VirtualBox (workaround)

If you have VirtualBox version 7 or higher, you don’t need to follow these instructions.
Instead, adhere to the guidelines above.

Use these instructions to construct a virtual machine that will run Windows 11 while disabling TPM and Secure Boot.

  1. Start up VirtualBox.
  2. Choose New from the Machine menu by clicking the menu button.
  3. Confirm the name of the virtual machine in the Name field option.
    Like vm-win11-lab.
  4. Choose the folder location to construct the Windows 11 VM under the Machine Folder option.
  5. Choose the Microsoft Windows platform from the Type menu.
  6. Choose Windows 11 (64-bit) under the Version option.
  7. Then press the Next button.
  8. Select 4GB or greater for the machine’s system memory.
  9. Pick the Create a virtual hard disk now option.
  10. Select Create from the menu.
  11. The VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) option should be chosen.
  12. Several hard drive file formats, including VDI, VHD (Virtual Hard Disk), and VMDK, are supported by the program (Virtual Machine Disk).
    Although each approach has benefits and drawbacks, the VDI option is best for the majority of use cases for general.
  13. Then press the Next button.
  14. Choose the Dynamically allocated option to increase the drive’s size as necessary.
  15. Then press the Next button.
  16. Set the virtual hard drive’s dimensions.
    For installation and simple apps, the default size of 80GB is enough, but the size will vary depending on the programs and data you intend to save on the drive.
  17. Select Create from the menu.
  18. On the left side, right-click the newly formed virtual machine, then choose Settings.
  19. Select System.
  20. Choose the Motherboard tab.
  21. Configure the boot order in the Boot order option by choosing the item and using the left-side up and down arrows.
    The item check box may also be removed to disconnect accessories.
  22. Click the Processor tab.
  23. Use the slider to choose how many processors to provide the Windows 11 virtual machine in the Processors option.
    Your choice will depend on your hardware, but generally speaking, you want to provide each Windows 11 system with at least two to four cores.
  24. Toggle to Storage.
  25. Choose the Optical Drive option under the Storage Devices section.
  26. Click Choose a disk file from the drop-down menu that appears when you click the disc icon in the Attributes section.
  27. Choose the ISO file for Windows 11.
  28. Mount the installation media by clicking the Open button.
    Select Display.
  29. Click the Screen tab.
  30. To enhance video performance, select the Enable 3D Acceleration option under the Acceleration option.
  31. Use the slider to enter the virtual machine’s video memory requirements under the Video Memory option.
  32. Choose the Ok option.
  33. To start the virtual machine normally, right-click, choose the Start submenu, and then select Normal Start.
  34. Use the Shift + F10 keyboard shortcut to launch Command Prompt from the Windows Setup page.
  35. Press Enter after you type the following command:
    regedit
  36. Follow this route while you navigate:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup
  37. Right-click on Setup (folder), choose New, then Key.
  38. Enter the key’s name, LabConfig.
  39. Select New from the context menu by right-clicking the LabConfig (folder) key, and then choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  40. Enter the key’s name, BypassTPMCheck.
  41. To change the value of the newly formed key from 0 to 1, double-click it.
  42. Choose the Ok option.
  43. Select New from the context menu by right-clicking the LabConfig (folder) key, and then choose DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  44. Enter the DWORD value BypassSecureBootCheck.
  45. To change the value of the newly formed key from 0 to 1, double-click it.
  46. Choose the Ok option.
  47. Then press the Next button.
  48. Select Install now from the menu.
  49. Select the I don’t have a product key option.
    After the installation, Windows 11 will be automatically reactivated if it was already active.
  50. Choose the Windows 11 edition that your license key activates.
  51. Choose I accept the licensing terms from the menu.
  52. Then press the Next button.
  53. Choose the Custom: Install Windows only (advanced) option.
  54. Choose the virtual machine’s hard disk, Drive 0 Unallocated Space, to install Windows 11.
  55. Then press the Next button.
  56. After installation, on the first page of the out-of-the-box experience, choose your area.
  57. Select Yes from the menu.
  58. Choose your preferred keyboard layout.
  59. Select Yes from the menu.
  60. If designing a second layout is not necessary for you, click the Skip option.

You may start using Windows 11 in a virtual environment after completing the procedures, which cause the virtual computer to restart.

As an alternative, Oracle is creating a fresh iteration of VirtualBox with seamless support for the setup of Windows 11.
Despite the lack of information on the release date of the new version, which will feature Secure Boot and TPM 2.0, you can currently download a development preview to run Windows 11 without the need for workarounds.
