How to insert special letters and symbols in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and OpenOffice Writer

Inserting symbols in Microsoft Word

Use the shortcut key Ctrl+’+letter to add a letter in Microsoft Word that has an accent mark above it.
For instance, Ctrl+’+e would be the shortcut key for an accented é.
To invert the accent mark, press the tilde key’s opposite accent mark.

  1. Open Word.
  2. Open the existing document or create a new one in which you want to include the special character.
  3. Either from the Insert tab or the top menu, choose Insert.
  4. Either choose the Symbol option from the Insert menu or click the Symbol option on the Insert tab.
    If you can’t locate the required symbol, click More Symbols.
  5. After selecting the letter with the required accent mark from the symbol list, click the Insert button. It’s possible that you’ll need to use the scroll bar to see more options.
  6. By scrolling down the character list, selecting the symbol, and then clicking Insert, you may add the upside-down question mark, square root, and other symbols.
    Make sure the font is set to Normal text unless you wish to use an accent from another font.

Inserting symbols in Google Docs

  1. Open Google Docs.
  2. Click Insert.
  3. You may choose or draw the special character you want to use by choosing Special Characters.

Inserting symbols in OpenOffice Writer

  1. Open OpenOffice Writer.
  2. Click on the top menu’s Insert option.
  3. Choose Special Characters from the menu.
  4. Select the specific character that requires modification.
    Bear in mind that not every character will appear in every typeface.
