Microsoft Word automatically selects a typeface and font size for you when you launch the software.
Usually, Calibri or Times New Roman are used as the default fonts, and the usual font size is 11 or 12.
Find your version of Microsoft Word in the list below, then follow the instructions to alter the default font properties.
Word 2010 and later
- Make sure the Home tab is selected in the toolbar.
- Click the Font Dialog Box Launcher in the Font section.
- Change the font properties to your preference in the Font window.
- Select Set As Default.
- Select All documents based on the Normal .dotm template in the dialog box that appears, and then click Ok.
Word 2007
- Click the Font Dialogue Box Launcher button under the Home tab.
- Then, select your new default font properties by clicking the Font tab.
- Click Yes after selecting Default.
Online Microsoft Word
You cannot alter the default font type or size in Word Online, in contrast to the versions of Microsoft Word that you install on a computer.
When you start a new blank document in Word Online after making changes to the font size or type, the font size defaults to 11-point Calibri.
