Learn how to open a port in the firewall (Windows firewall).
When software or game must connect to the Internet or another computer on a network, it must be able to communicate data through a network port.
A firewall prevents network software from talking to another computer by protecting it from illegal access and blocking any redundant network ports.
Select the version of Windows on your computer below, then follow the instructions to allow the software through Windows Firewall.
Opening a port in Windows 11 firewall
When you try to grant access to a multiplayer computer game while it’s running, Windows Firewall asks if you want to allow that software to connect to the Internet.
- Go to Control Panel.
- Click the Allow an app through Windows Firewall link under Windows Firewall.
- If the Windows Defender Firewall window appears, in the left navigation menu, click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Change the access settings for the applications in the list by clicking the Change settings button.
- Check the box next to the program you want to allow access to the Windows Firewall.
Check the Home / Work (Private) option only if you are playing an online game on your local network. Check the Public box if you need an internet connection for the software.
Opening a port in Windows 10 and Windows 8 firewall
When you try to give access to a multiplayer computer game, Windows Firewall asks if you want to allow that software to connect to the Internet.
- Go to Control Panel and click on it.
- Select System and Security from the Allow an app or feature through the Windows Defender Firewall drop-down.
- Change the access settings for the applications in the list by clicking the Change settings button.
- Check the box next to the application you want to allow access to Windows Firewall.
Check the Home / Work (Private) option only if you are playing an online game on your local network. Check the Public box if you need an internet connection for the software.
